Here's how to work out what's actually going on.

First, Understand What "Eating" Actually Looks Like

Before troubleshooting, it helps to know what a normal feeding cycle actually looks like, since it's slower than most people expect.

Once a trap catches something, it takes roughly 5–12 days to fully digest it, depending on the size of the prey and the conditions the plant is in. The trap will stay closed and appear "resting" during this time — that's completely normal, not a problem. Afterwards, the trap reopens, and the digested exoskeleton either falls out or gets blown away.

If you're expecting instant results, it can look like nothing is happening when the plant is actually working exactly as it should.

Reason 1: The Trap Isn't Actually Being Triggered

Venus Flytraps rely on tiny trigger hairs inside each trap. These need to be touched twice within about 20 seconds (or once, followed by a second touch shortly after) for the trap to snap shut. This mechanism exists to stop the plant wasting energy closing on rain drops or debris.

Sometimes a trap closes quickly but doesn't fully seal around the prey — this happens when the trigger was activated by something too small (a piece of debris, a drop of water, or an insect that escaped before the trap sealed shut).

In this case, the trap will typically reopen within 24–48 hours, since there's no prey inside to digest. This isn't a malfunction — it's the plant conserving energy once it detects there's nothing to break down.

Reason 3: The Trap Has Already "Used Up" Its Lifespan

Each trap can only close and reopen a limited number of times — usually 3 to 5 full feeding cycles — before it stops functioning and eventually turns black and dies off. This is a completely natural part of the plant's growth cycle, not a sign of poor care.

Venus Flytraps need a lot of direct light to stay healthy and responsive — more than most people expect for what looks like a small, delicate plant. Insufficient light can lead to weak, sluggish traps that respond slowly or not at all, even when correctly triggered.

What to check: if your plant's traps look pale, thin, or elongated rather than compact and vividly coloured, low light is a likely culprit. A bright windowsill or supplemental grow light can make a real difference.

Reason 6: Incorrect Water or Feeding Habits

Venus Flytraps are sensitive to water quality and can be stressed by tap water, which often contains minerals they're not adapted to. They're also easy to overfeed, since each trap needs real recovery time between catches.

What to check:

  • Use distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water — not tap water — for both watering and misting.
  • Avoid manually feeding traps too frequently. Even in the wild, a Venus Flytrap might only catch a few insects a month.
  • Never feed a trap human food (meat, cheese, etc.) — it can't digest it properly and the trap will rot and die.

When to Actually Be Concerned

Most "not eating" issues aren't cause for concern, but a few signs are worth paying closer attention to:
